A BRIDE FOR ISAAC - GENESIS 24

The story of the selection of a bride for Isaac in Genesis 24 gives us several important lessons that we would be wise to understand and practice during the important times in our lives. Here are eight items. Read Genesis 24 and meditate on these things.

1. Even the perceived inconsequential people in God’s plan play an important role in carrying out God’s will. Abraham’s trusted servant is not named in scripture, but he had a very important task to continue the fulfillment of God’s promise to Abraham. (verse 2)

2. Who you marry is important. Abraham knew that the wrong bride could change the course of his son’s life. Selecting a mate for life has many future consequences. (verses 3-4)

3. It’s o.k. to ask questions for clarification and understanding as you undertake an important task. Don’t just assume you know what to do. Ask for more complete and wise counsel. (verses 5-8)

4. Be sure to pray during life altering decisions. The servant prayed for success with God’s help. (verses 12-14)

5. Give thanks to God as things begin to unfold. Acknowledge God’s role in achieving the desired outcome. (verses 26-27 and 52)

6. Stay focused on the task. Don’t be distracted by the individual steps of the journey. The main thing is the main thing. (verses 32-33)

7. Don’t change or shortcut your actions at the last minute just to get the job completed. The urge to get it done should not alter our actions. (verses 54-58)

8. You can move forward after major events in your life. Comfort from the right people will allow us to overcome events that may seem insurmountable at the time. (verse 67)

Let this story of a faithful unnamed dedicated servant help us as we move forward in the things God wills for us and His purpose.
